Abstract

An abstract is an abbreviated transcription of a document that includes the date of the record and every name it contains. It may also provide relationships or descriptions of the people mentioned.

Abstracts are commonly used by genealogists to capture the essential information from a longer document — wills, deeds, court records — without transcribing the entire text. They are particularly useful for cataloging large collections of records.
