Affinity

Also known as: in-law relationship, marriage relationship

Affinity describes a relationship established through marriage rather than through blood (consanguinity). For example, a personโ€™s relationship with their spouseโ€™s parents is one of affinity โ€” they are โ€œin-laws,โ€ not biological relatives.

Understanding affinity is important in genealogical research because many historical records and legal documents distinguish between relatives by blood and relatives by marriage. Some regions also had laws restricting marriage between people related by affinity.
